Hypnotherapy is a kind of psychotherapy. Hypnosis is thought to work by altering our state of consciousness in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is turned off, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert.

The conscious control of the mind is inhibited, and the subconscious mind awoken. Since the subconscious mind is a deeper-seated, more instinctive force than the conscious mind, this is the part which has to change for the patient’s behavior and physical state to alter.

Hypnotherapy can be applied to many psychological, emotional and physical disorders. It is used to relieve pain in surgery and dentistry and has proved to be of benefit in obstetrics.

It can shorten the delivery stage of labor and reduce the need for painkillers. It can ease the suffering of the disabled and those facing terminal illness, and it has been shown to help people to overcome addictions such as smoking and alcoholism, and to help with bulimia.

Children are generally easy to hypnotize and can be helped with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) and chronic asthma, whilst teenagers can conquer stammering or blushing problems which can otherwise make their lives miserable.

In some parts of the world hypnotherapy is till viewed with suspicion. How ever in 2002 UK Department for Education and Skills developed The National Occupational Standards for hypnotherapy linked to National Vocational Qualification based on National Qualifications Framework under The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. And thus hypnotherapy was approved as a stand-alone therapy in UK.

At this stage the therapist would be attempting to establish a rapport with you that would enable you to make the most of the session. Later the individual would use your perception of smoking and its role in your life to enable you to recognize the benefits of giving up smoking.

Once you are done with the session the therapist would help you achieve a highly relaxed state of mind wherein you would feel as if you want to sleep but you would be in a state of flux. Your subconscious mind would be fully awake and in control but your conscious mind would be at rest.

After the session is over you would be wide awake and in complete control of your senses. Nothing would have changed except that your subconscious mind would have been trained to accept that smoking is bad for you.

In the eventuality that you are still feeling drowsy it is usually advisable to ask a friend to pick you up and drop you off at home. In addition you would be required to take certain precautions.

You would have to ensure that all the things that you associate with smoking should be removed from your comfort zone. Your ashtray, cigarettes and any other implements should be put away and you should remember that you ask your friends to not offer you a smoke in the near future.

Your mind is divided into the conscious and the subconscious. Your conscious mind is always active and within your control but your subconscious mind is not within your control. At least not totally.
